Le 29 juillet 2026 marquera le trentième anniversaire de la création du site Crystal Ball, un espace entièrement dédié au chanteur, auteur-compositeur, guitariste et membre du groupe STYX, Tommy Shaw. Tout a commencé après une rencontre inoubliable avec mon idole, à Québec. Je suis repartie de là avec l’idée — un peu folle à l’époque — de créer une page Web en français pour permettre à Tommy de rejoindre ses fans francophones du Québec et d’Europe. C’était l’aube d’Internet, un monde encore neuf, rempli de possibilités. La simple idée de pouvoir rejoindre la planète entière, de trouver des passionnés comme moi, venant de cultures et de langues différentes, mais réunis par la même musique, me fascinait. Derrière nos écrans, un nouveau lien devenait possible.
Au fil des années, le site est devenu bilingue. Tommy Shaw a d’ailleurs été l’un des premiers artistes à offrir un site entièrement en français et en anglais. Il s’impliquait personnellement dans le processus, ce qui rendait l’aventure encore plus stimulante et précieuse.
Puis sont arrivés les réseaux sociaux, qui ont malheureusement transformé l’expérience en ligne. Cachés derrière un pseudonyme, certains se permettaient de dire tout ce qui leur passait par la tête, blessant parfois sans réfléchir. L’ambiance n’était plus la même, ni pour l’artiste, ni pour moi.
On dit souvent qu’après 25 ans dans une même entreprise, on pense à la retraite. Après 30 ans, je crois que le moment est venu pour moi aussi. Très bientôt, le site de Tommy disparaîtra du Web et ses noms de domaine redirigeront vers la page officielle de STYX. Mais avant de tourner la page, je veux remercier les personnes qui ont rendu cette aventure si exceptionnelle.
D’abord, mon mari, mon meilleur ami, mon complice, mon amour : Richard Desjardins. C’est lui qui a eu l’idée de créer un site Internet, alors que je n’y connaissais absolument rien. Si je ne l’avais pas écouté, rien de tout cela n’aurait existé. Merci mon Amour!
Mon fils Érik, petit génie en informatique, qui m’a beaucoup aidé au niveau technique quand j’en ai eu besoin. Merci mon fils.
Je veux aussi remercier Marie-Claude Ouellet, qui m’a énormément aidée avec les traductions. Nous nous sommes rencontrées en 1981 à cause d’une erreur du fan club de STYX : elle avait reçu mes choses à Cabano, et moi les siennes à Rouyn-Noranda. Nous avons commencé à nous écrire, et cette amitié dure encore aujourd’hui. Merci, Marie.
Grâce au site, j’ai rencontré des gens extraordinaires qui m’ont offert soutien et amitié. Brigitte Boulais, photographe exceptionnelle, a beaucoup contribué au site. Elle est toujours une grande amie, et je me sens privilégiée de l’avoir dans ma vie. Nous partageons la même passion, et nos aventures ont toujours été mémorables.
J’ai aussi fait la connaissance de fans américains avec qui j’ai tissé des liens très forts : Marjorie Prosky, Lisa Bricker et Dawn McBride, entre autres. Leur présence et leur enthousiasme ont été essentiels à la continuité du site. C’était toujours un bonheur de se retrouver lors d’un même spectacle.
Je pense également à Olga Perkovic en Ontario, à Michel (Mickey) Desjardins à Sherbrooke, à Mickey Jorgensen aux États-Unis et à tous les membres du groupe hommage The Grand Illusion, dont Steve Forget. Ensemble, nous avons vécu des moments intenses, notamment lorsqu’il a fallu trouver un remplaçant pour le chanteur principal de STYX.
Merci aussi à tous ceux qui ont visité le site au fil des ans. Vous avez été des centaines de milliers chaque année. Vous m’avez motivée à donner le meilleur de moi-même. Interagir avec vous a été un vrai plaisir.
J’ai eu des accès privilégiés et j’ai appris à bien connaître les membres du groupe. J’ai même été surprise qu’on prenne mon opinion en considération lors d’une période difficile, alors qu’il fallait remplacer le chanteur. J’ai osé suggérer un artiste canadien qui m’avait profondément impressionnée lorsqu’il avait assuré la première partie du groupe à Montréal et à Québec : Lawrence Gowan. Je connaissais sa musique, j’avais tous ses albums, mais je ne l’avais jamais rencontré. Pourtant, je l’ai proposé comme chanteur de STYX.
Merci, Larry, d’avoir accepté. Tu es absolument parfait dans ce groupe, et jamais je n’ai regretté d’avoir pensé à toi. Mon seul regret est de ne pas avoir réussi à faire de toi un fan des Habs.
Enfin, rien de tout cela n’aurait été possible sans la confiance et la participation de Tommy Shaw et de sa femme Jeanne. Je les remercie du fond du cœur de m’avoir permis de gérer le site pendant toutes ces années. Ce fut un immense privilège. Je leur serai éternellement reconnaissante pour toutes les expériences extraordinaires que j’ai pu vivre auprès de STYX, de Shaw-Blades et de Tommy en solo. Ce fut une aventure merveilleuse que je chérirai toujours.
Mais voilà… comme le chantent Shaw-Blades, this is the end, time to say goodbye. Un chapitre se ferme, mais ma passion pour cette musique, elle, restera pour toujours.

On July 29, 2026, we will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Crystal Ball website, a space entirely dedicated to singer, songwriter, guitarist, and STYX member Tommy Shaw. It all began after an unforgettable meeting with my idol in Québec City. I left that encounter with the idea — a bit wild at the time — of creating a French-language webpage so Tommy could reach his francophone fans in Québec and Europe. It was the dawn of the Internet, a brand‑new world filled with possibilities. The thought of connecting with people across the globe, of finding others who shared my passion despite different cultures and languages, fascinated me. Behind our screens, music became a new kind of bridge.
Over the years, the site became bilingual. Tommy Shaw was actually one of the first artists to offer a fully bilingual website, in both French and English. He was personally involved in the process, which made the adventure even more exciting and meaningful.
Then came social media, which unfortunately changed the online experience. Hidden behind a username, some people felt free to say whatever they wanted, hurtful or not. The atmosphere was no longer the same — neither for the artist nor for me.
People often retire after 25 years in the same company. After 30 years, I think it’s time for me to do the same. Very soon, Tommy’s website will be taken offline, and the domain names will redirect to the official STYX page. But before closing this chapter, I want to thank the people who made this journey so extraordinary.
First, my husband — my best friend, my partner, my love — Richard Desjardins. He was the one who suggested creating a website, even though I had absolutely no idea how to build one. If I hadn’t listened to him, none of this would have happened. Thank you my Love!
My son Érik , a little computer genius, who helped me so much with the technical side whenever I needed it. Thank you, my son.
I also want to thank Marie‑Claude Ouellet, who helped me tremendously with translations. We met in 1981 because of a mix‑up by the STYX fan club: she received my things in Cabano, and I received hers in Rouyn‑Noranda. The two towns are 12 hours apart if driving. We started writing to each other, and that friendship has lasted ever since. Thank you, Marie.
Through the site, I met extraordinary people who offered support and friendship. Brigitte Boulais, an exceptional photographer, contributed greatly to the site. She is still a dear friend, and I feel privileged to have her in my life. We share the same passion, and our adventures together have always been unforgettable.
I also met American fans with whom I formed very strong bonds: Marjorie Prosky, Lisa Bricker, and Dawn McBride, among others. Their presence and enthusiasm played an important role in keeping the site alive. It was always a joy to meet up whenever we attended the same show.

Together, we lived some intense moments — especially when it came time to find a replacement for STYX’s lead singer.
Thank you as well to everyone who visited the site over the years. Hundreds of thousands of you came every year. You motivated me to give the very best of myself. Interacting with you was truly a pleasure.
I was given privileged access and came to know the band members of STYX. I was even surprised that my opinion was taken into account during a difficult period, when the group needed to replace their singer. I dared to suggest a Canadian artist who had deeply impressed me when he opened for the band in Montréal and Québec: Lawrence Gowan. I knew his music — I owned all his albums — but I had never followed his career closely or met him. Still, I suggested him as the new singer for STYX.
Thank you, Larry, for accepting the job. You are absolutely perfect in this band, and I have never once regretted thinking of you. My only regret is that I never managed to turn you into a Habs fan.
Finally, none of this would have been possible without the trust and participation of Tommy Shaw and his wife Jeanne. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to manage the site all these years. It was an immense privilege. I will always be grateful for the extraordinary experiences I had around STYX, Shaw‑Blades, and Tommy’s solo work. It was a wonderful adventure that I will cherish forever.
And so… as Shaw‑Blades sing, this is the end, time to say goodbye. A chapter closes, but my passion for this music will remain forever.
