1998 was really a fun year. I had the great opportunity of following the making of 7Deadly Zens from the very beginning to its release date. Although the site kept growing and brought more responsibilities, I still was a huge fan of Tommy’s music so I was having a lot of fun here. We chatted most every day and talked about ideas on how to promote his new album. We put a lot of teasers on the web site, parts of lyrics, little images with the mention TS:7DZ to see if people could try and figure out the title. Fans were anxious to hear the new material and knew the first single was called “Ocean” and so Tommy recorded the sound of the real ocean waves and we put it on the site to announce the new song Ocean as a joke! Here is an exchange we had in the Instant Messenger the next morning we posted that:
TOMMY: Hi Kim
KIM: Hi there
TOMMY: Any response regarding the ocean wav?
KIM: Yes, you have been called a teaser, silly Tommy, funny Tommy, isn’t he just a teaser or what??? … but they all seemed to have a great laugh
TOMMY: Good!
KIM: LOL
TOMMY: It was all true. It really was the ocean…
TOMMY: right?
KIM: I know, some people even mentioned the walk-man on the beach
KIM: right
KIM: No one called you a liar so that’s good lol
TOMMY: we never said it would be the song…lol
KIM: Nope
As a fan, it was really fun for me to be able to help in any way and not many people know this, but I almost ended up on the album too. Here’s another chat we had:
TOMMY: Hi Kim
KIM: Hi
TOMMY: I am still buzzing from the day with Alison Krauss yesterday. What a sweet voice…The song is very sweet too–the only one of its sort on the record…
KIM: Oh cool, I was gonna ask how it went with her
TOMMY: She and I sound pretty darn good together
KIM: Can’t wait to hear that, is it a duet or is she doing back vocals?
TOMMY: Really a duet
KIM: It’s really near the end now…
TOMMY: I sing the first verse, Alison the second, then we harmonize on the chorus, etc.
KIM: wow, from the few songs I know from her, I bet it sounds absolutely wonderful.
TOMMY: Yes it is. All that is left to get in is Michael Cartellone’s drum performances, perhaps create one more music link and then start the mixing. I am ready!
KIM: All right!
KIM: One more music link?… hmmmm
KIM: Do it in French LOL
TOMMY: That is a good idea…
TOMMY: You want to do me a favor?
KIM: Sure
TOMMY: Record yourself saying in French, “Don’t Talk to me, Make love to me.” I hope Richard won’t mind, but I have an idea of how to use it…
KIM: ok
KIM: LOL
KIM: Richard [my husband] is here and is finding this funny… hey, you really got me curious now
TOMMY: I just told Jeanne and she gave me one of those umhmm looks. lol. She thinks I am crazy sometimes…
TOMMY: I have an idea that I might be able to put your voice in the loop. I cannot promise, but if it works, you could be on the record…
TOMMY: I don’t wish to mislead you, because you never know if things work or not until you try
KIM: How do you want this said? I mean the tone?
KIM: Tommy, I have a horrible voice… maybe you should have Jeanne say the phrase
KIM: Do you want it in a sexy way? in a whispering way? …
TOMMY: Don’t over do it, just say it, sort of softly without too much expression
KIM: ok
TOMMY: And let me see what happens. Even if it doesn’t work, it will be fun to play with it…
KIM: If it can be of any help to you… cool with me!
KIM: I meant it the other day when I said I was ready to do whatever it
takes to make this album work up here… I still do!
TOMMY: Thanks. Isn’t this fun?
TOMMY: Makes one a bit nervous tho!
KIM: Yes it is… I’m really anxious to hear the final result
TOMMY: Okay, I will say so long and wait to hear from you. Thnaks…
TOMMY: thanks, that is!
KIM: No problems Tommy, it really is a pleasure, really!
KIM: I’ll go do it now, I’ll be back soon 🙂
In the end, it didn’t happen but I was still very happy to have been a part of it. And really, how many fans can say that their favorite artist have a wav file of them saying a sexy phrase in French in their computer? 😉 7Deadly Zens is still one of my favorite albums today.

L’année 1998 a été vraiment amusante pour moi. J’ai eu le privilège de suivre la progression de l’album 7Deadly Zens du tout début jusqu’à sa sortie. Même si le site me tenait occupée, je demeurais une grande fan de la musique de Tommy alors pas besoin de vous dire que je m’amusais vraiment beaucoup. Nous parlions via la plateforme de clavardage AOL à tous les jours pour échanger des idées pour la promotion de son nouvel album. Nous avons mis des images avec la mention TS:7DZ afin que ses fans tentent de deviner le titre. Les fans avaient hâte et savaient que le premier simple s’intitulait “Ocean”. Nous avions annoncé qu’éventuellement, nous aurions la chanson dans le site mais avant, en blague, Tommy avait enregistré le son des vagues de l’océan et nous l’avons mis en ligne. Voici un échange que nous avons eu le lendemain matin :
TOMMY: Hi Kim
KIM: Hi there
TOMMY: As-tu des réponses du fichier sonore Ocean ?
KIM: Oui, on te traite de blagueur, de fou, de rigolo… mais tous semblent trouver le tout bien drôle.
TOMMY: Bien!
KIM: LOL
TOMMY: Tout est véridique. C’est vraiment l’océan…
TOMMY: n’est-ce pas?
KIM: Exact
KIM: Personne ne t’a traité de menteur, alors c’est OK ! LOL
TOMMY: On a jamais dit que ce serait la chanson… lol
KIM: Nope
En tant que fan, ce fut vraiment des moments extraordinaires de l’aider et une chose a failli se réaliser. Peu de gens connaissent cette histoire. Voici un autre extrait de clavardage :
TOMMY: Hi Kim

TOMMY: Je suis encore sur un “high” après avoir passé la journée avec Alison Krauss hier. Elle a tellement une belle voix… et la chanson est bonne aussi, la seule dans ce genre sur l’album…
KIM: Oh cool, j’allais justement te demander comment ça s’était passé.
TOMMY: Elle et moi faisons de très belles harmonies ensemble.
KIM: J’ai hâte d’entendre ça. Est-ce un duo ou est-ce qu’elle fait des choeurs ?
TOMMY: C’est vraiment un duo.
KIM: C’est presque terminé maintenant…
TOMMY: Je chante le premier couplet, Alison chante le deuxième et ensuite on chante ensemble pour le refrain.
KIM: wow, d’après les chansons que j’ai entendu d’elle, ça doit être super beau !
TOMMY: Oui, ça l’est. Maintenant, il ne reste plus que les pistes de batterie de Michael Cartellone et peut-être un dernier lien musical et ensuite on passe au mixage. Je suis prêt !
KIM: All right!
KIM: Un autre lien musical ?… hmmmm
KIM: Fais-le en français ! LOL
TOMMY: C’est une bonne idée.
TOMMY: Je peux te demander une faveur ?
KIM: Certainement!
TOMMY: Enregistre toi en disant “Ne me parle pas, fais-moi l’amour”. J’espère que ça ne dérangera pas Richard, mais j’ai une idée de comment je pourrais m’en servir.
KIM: ok
KIM: LOL
KIM: Richard [mon mari] est ici et trouve ça bien drôle… mais tu as piqué ma curiosité…
TOMMY: Je viens de le dire à Jeanne et elle m’a regardé d’un drôle d’air lol. Elle croit que je suis fou parfois…
TOMMY: J’ai une idée et je pourrais mettre ta voix dans une boucle. Je ne promet rien, mais si ça fonctionne, tu serais sur l’album.
TOMMY: Je ne veux pas te donner de faux espoirs, parce qu’on sait jamais comment les choses se finalisent mais j’aimerais essayer.
KIM: Comment veux-tu que ce soit dit ? Je veux dire le ton ?
KIM: Tommy, je n’ai pas une très belle voix… peut-être que tu devrais demander à Jeanne de dire la phrase.
KIM: Est-ce que tu veux que ce soit dit de façon sexy ? En chuchotant ?
TOMMY: N’en mets pas trop, juste de façon douce sans trop d’expression.
KIM: ok
TOMMY: Et je m’occupe du reste. Même si ça ne fonctionne pas, ce sera amusant de jouer avec.
KIM: Si ça peut t’aider, ça me fait plaisir.
KIM: J’étais sincère quand je t’ai dit l’autre jour que je ferais n’importe quoi pour que ton album marche ici…
TOMMY: Merci. N’est-ce pas amusant ?
TOMMY: Et ça rend nerveux en même temps.
KIM: Oui… et j’ai très hâte d’entendre la version finale.
TOMMY: OK, je te dis à bientôt et je vais attendre de tes nouvelles. Merci…
KIM: Pas de problème Tommy, ça me fait vraiment plaisir, sincèrement !
KIM: Je vais aller faire l’enregistrement maintenant. De retour bientôt 🙂
Ma voix n’a pas été sur l’album finalement, mais quelle belle expérience. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de gens qui peuvent se vanter du fait que leur artiste préféré possède dans son ordinateur un échantillon de sa voix disant “ne me parle pas, fais-moi l’amour” 😉 7Deadly Zens demeure un de mes albums préférés encore aujourd’hui.
